Mataragas, Defense Dominate
Chicago, IL--Rob Mataragas scattered seven hits allowing only one run in a complete game 10-1 victory Tuesday night.
The Titans who lost a week ago to the Clout by a score of 13-3 were looking to return the favor.
"We needed to get back at these guys for the way they beat us last week" said outfielder Kyle Eick. "You have to show them that we can play ball too."
Titans hitters jumped on Clout starter Wally Widelski (L, 1-1) early. They scored two runs in the first on Mike LaCombe's two out single and another run in the third on a LaGaryne Sears fielder's choice.
The Clout scored their lone run in the fourth on a Jim Nobel sacrifice fly.
With the score 3-1 the Titans roughed up Clout reliever Matt Miles for five runs in the seventh, the last scoring when Mike LaCombe collided with catcher Milan Styokovic. Styokovic followed LaCombe to the dugout, pushing him from behind which resulted in a bench-clearing argument and the ejection of Clout manager Kevin Renkin, Styokovic, and Miles.
"That really started in the first inning when Kyle Eick was able to knock the ball lose trying to protect against a tag." said manager Wayne Hegner. "They were upset and tried to claim Eick interfered with Stoykovic making a play on LaCombe at second. To me, it was a ridiculous argument because if Eick had cleaned his clock, he wouldn't had made a throw to second either."
Aiding Mataragas in his effort was a stingy Titans defense that turned a season high four double plays.
After an off day on Wednesday, the Titans will take on the River Bandits at 7:15 PM Thursday night at the U.I.C. North Field.
