Titans Rally For Win
Elgin, IL--For the second straight night the Titans had to rely on late inning heroics to pull off a come from behind victory beating the Fox Valley Angels 5-4.
"We had to scramble for it, but it was a good win. We got some timely hits and the bullpen really did the job." said manager Wayne Hegner.
The Titans fell behind early as starting pitcher Eric Stengele suffered control problems, allowing four runs on four hits while walking four Angel hitters in in just over one inning of work.
"I felt good, but I just couldn't find my release point", said Stengele. This was only Stengele's second appearance after missing last season due to reconstructive elbow surgery. "He's healthy and strong", said Hegner "He just needs innings to get back in the groove."
Stengele was unable to record an out in the second inning leaving the game with a run already scored and runners on second and third. Relievers Jim Bose, Bobby Roeback, and Jason Soukup completely shut the Angels offense down allowing only two base runners the rest of the way.
Hitting coach Julio Pereira said, "Those guys came up big, it gave us the opportunity to get our offence on track and crawl back into the game. Our intensity was great."
The Titans got some help in the fifth scoring two unearned runs off an Anthony Contaldo error and a pair of wild pitches.
In the top of the seventh trailing 4-2 with two outs outfielder Kyle Eick drew a walk off reliever Quinn Leath. Mike Gagliano then came in to pinch run for Eick. Gary Bjorklund followed with single to center advancing Gagliano to second. Ryan Priola then singled to right but Gagliano was unable to score as Angels right fielder Luke Schander aggressively charged the ball. After falling behind 0-2 Jim Bose singled to left driving in both Gagliano and Bjorklund giving the Titans a 5-4 lead.
Closer Jason Soukup nailed down the win earning his first save of the year striking out the first two hitters he faced before inducing a game ending pop up to center off the bat of Anthony Cantaldo.
The Titans next play Thursday night at Judson College where they take on the Aurora Warriors.
